Lush rainforests, beautiful beaches, and mountain volcanoes make Costa Rica a popular tourist destination. With much to explore, Costa Rica is an eco-adventurer’s dream come true! But regular tourists don’t get to see an often-hidden side of Costa Rica. Just outside the capital city of San José is the suburb of Alajuelita. Outside that suburb is a small migrant community of people who piece together houses with scraps and garbage they find throughout the city.

Many years ago, our local ministry partner was stirred into action. He recruited a couple of church contacts and began to build simple and well-built homes for those who are truly in need. Just as on our Guanacaste trips, we’re involved with the local church in San José while we serve, and the church maintains a long-term relationship with the families after we build their new home, to ensure our impact is truly helpful and sustainable.

Lodging

Typically a small hotel. Teams have stayed in multiple hotels through the years depending on the location of the worksite, size of the team, and the time of year. Rooms typically have multiple beds per room with 2-4 people per room and a private bathroom.

How You’ll Serve

Here are examples of the types of projects you might be involved with:

  • Replace an inadequate house with an adequate one, complete with a sturdy frame and a solid roof
  • Provide much-needed conversation and company for elderly residents
  • Play games and read Bible stories to neighborhood children
  • Assist with other ministry opportunities provided by the local church

Our Partners

Mazatlan Missions, founded in 2016, serves to impact lives and communities through global partners, holistic projects, and short-term volunteers transformed by each unique service-leadership cultural experience. Specifically, they coordinate the efforts of short-term service with long-term local leaders to accomplish projects that impact communities. Please fill out an interest form, or contact James with Mazatlan Missions at (719) 640-4844.

Our local ministry partner is passionate about giving local residents the hope and pride that come from having a home with a concrete floor, stable framing, and a roof that doesn’t leak. That’s a major blessing to residents who are doing what they can to survive and provide for their families. The local church in San José is also involved throughout the week we serve and maintains a long-term relationship with the families.

Make-up tips, viral videos, and giving away large amounts of money to complete strangers are a few ways young people have found themselves becoming famous, influential, and extremely wealthy. Along with social media, we’re all influenced by the people around us through news, music, work, school, sports, and basically anywhere we direct our attention. Whether we think so or not, everyone is an influencer in some way or another. Everything we do is watched by our friends, family, peers, and others around us, making an impression and having influence.

Our goal with the program this year is to help students navigate the many influences in their lives and encourage them to look toward Jesus, the greatest influencer of all time, so they use their influence to positively change their culture. Romans 12:2
