Belize is a stunningly beautiful country located on the eastern coast of Central America, sharing borders with Mexico and Guatemala. The country has just under 400,000 citizens and spans over 8,000 square miles. Many people head to Belize as a tourist destination because of its beautiful access to the Caribbean and world-renowned snorkeling and scuba diving. Like many Central American countries, poverty, access to clean water and healthcare, and limited opportunities for differently-abled children are common struggles in Belize. Disabled children in rural villages often face the greatest struggles, and many of them rarely or never leave their homes because of fear and shame surrounding their disabilities. Thankfully, efforts are growing to combat these issues. Our partnerships on the ground are changing Belize one person at a time, through education, Biblical training, empowerment, and community development.
We’ve put together an experience of a lifetime based in the Cayo district of Belize, near San Ignacio. You’ll have a chance to work with on-the-ground partners in ministry to make a lasting difference. Also built in to the experience are opportunities to dive into the culture, the history, and the fun things that Belize has to offer. Because it’s an English-speaking country, you’ll be able to connect with local Belizeans on a deep level. You’ll experience a great combination of service, evangelism, and fun with our partners.
As a dancer on this trip, you will be performing and teaching dance as a part of healing to a camp for differently-abled children in the San Ignacio area of Belize. You will also partner with local dancers for classes and cross cultural experiences. Additional opportunities to serve include home/garden work projects and playing with local children for any parents/adult family members wishing to travel along with their dancer.
Here are examples of the types of projects you might be involved with:
Our ministry partners have been making an impact in their community for the last several years by working tirelessly to bring clean water into rural villages, care for women through childbirth classes and hospital visits after their babies are born and building an amazing camp for special-needs children. This camp is the first of its kind in Belize and allows for disabled children and their families to experience everything that makes camp an adventure for kids, including a handicapped-accessible playground, zip-lining, a splash park, and even a petting zoo! They are looking for teams to help finish the bath house and dorms to make this a fully functional camp.
