- How You'll Serve
Spending a week in Grand Rapids will remind you of why Michigan is called the Great Lake State. The city sits on the Grand River and is only 25 miles east of Lake Michigan. Home of the internationally renowned Art Prize, the community is rich in art and culture with sculptures and museums throughout the city. Grand Rapids offers a big city feeling with the warmth of a small town.
Even though it’s easy to see the beauty of Grand Rapids, the city did not survive the nation’s recession untouched. Living in one of the cities hit the hardest by the economic problems, the people of Grand Rapids have struggled through failed industries and unemployment.
During the Grand Rapids Week of Hope, you will stay at a church that has been our partner since 2007, and the congregation will expectantly welcome you with open arms. Not only will you be in great company, you will also be close to Grand Haven State Park, Holland State Park, Millennium Park, and John Ball Zoo.
Your group might have the opportunity to serve with one of our partners that exists to serve the hungry and homeless in Grand Rapids. With help from volunteers like you, this organization is able to provide more than 200 people beds every night, more than 500
*Trips for Jr Highers Only*
July 26 - 31, 2015
Looking for a stellar way to get your 7th and 8th grade students on a mission trip?
A Week of Hope experience is the perfect answer for this dynamic age group!
If you’ve been looking for a mission trip where your Jr High age students (grades 7-8, ages 12-14) might meet and connect with other Jr High students, this is the camp for you!
This week’s camp is set up for Jr High students (and their leaders) only and gives you and your group a chance to serve the needs in Grand Rapids alongside other groups of the same age. This camp will ROCK with the unique energy and passion that Jr High students bring to any event!
Things to do in the area:
Grand Haven (state park, beach, & town), Downtown Grand Rapids, John Ball Park Zoo, Heritage Park, Wedgewood Park
Rivertown Crossings Mall
Michigan Adventures (1 1/2 hours away)
As your team members enter into the lives of others and build relationships with the people of Austin, they’ll experience God working through them at projects such as these…
- Assist with alley clean-ups and graffiti cover-ups, help with seniors’ yard work, and paint residents’ garages in a local neighborhood association.
- Serve individuals with physical, mental, and social/emotional challenges at an equine therapy center, assisting with animals and barns, various landscaping needs, and painting.
- Provide families with needed clothing and other items through a local thrift store by sorting, tagging, and displaying donations and painting, updating signage, and performing other in-store improvements.
- Accompany senior citizens from a care facility on various outings and events in the community.
- Help with painting, cleaning, and disassembly of electronics at a non-profit that gives all its proceeds to educational and environmental programs.
Your team members will be transformed by their experiences in Grand Rapids, Michigan. They’ll become Jesus’ hands and feet as they serve and bless people—but they won’t be the same either. This is the kind of story we frequently hear from students who’ve participated in Week of Hope:
“Being able to serve Jesus this week was amazing. I know that I changed the lives of my residents, and knowing I did this in His name feels awesome. This camp strengthened my relationship with many people.”
